Make a Difference: The Arc New London County
WHO: Matthew, a 20-year-old man with intellectual and developmental disabilities, his sister and their mom, who is also disabled.
AGENCY: The Arc New London County
THEIR SITUATION: Eight months ago, Matthew and his family had to evacuate the house they were renting due to conditions the landlord refused to address. They lost all of their belongings and were on the verge of homelessness, so the family had to separate. Matthew’s dad and sister now each live with different relatives, while he and his mom stay in a room in a friend’s very small trailer. Matthew misses his dad and sister a lot. His mom is thankful that he can attend The Arc’s day programming, which helps keep him upbeat. Matthew’s dad was laid off from his job. His mom is trying to find housing for all of them again, but it’s been next to impossible to save for a security deposit and keep up with all the bills they still have, including those for Matthew’s care. When the family was together they’d all listen to Matthew’s dad play the guitar; his mom hopes they’ll be able to do that again very soon.
WHAT TO GIVE: For the holidays, Matthew’s mom would love gift cards from Stop & Shop, Walmart or Target to purchase sheets, blankets and food. Matthew also needs a winter coat, men’s size medium, and he’s really hoping for a new set of earbuds so he can keep listening to music.
TO DONATE: Please send donations to The Arc New London County, 125 Sachem St., Norwich, CT, 06360, Attn: Bambi Poppick or call (860) 889-4435, ext. 116.
