Local roundup: Fitch/Stonington's Nowak finishes fourth in Class L 100 backstroke

Middletown — Fitch/Stonington junior Patrick Nowak placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke during Monday's CIAC Class L Championship swimming meet at Wesleyan University.

Nowak finished in 1:00.63 for the Falcons, who placed 11th in the team standings with 196 points.

Nowak also added a sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:04.01) and joined senior Matthew Planchon, sophomore Keegan Reck and sophomore John Marcolina to finish sixth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.94).

Marcolina also placed in two events, finishing sixth in the 50 freestyle (21.95) and eighth in the 100 free (49.68).

College baseball

• Avery Point beat Kirkwood Community College 1-0 in 10 innings in the second game of a doubleheader at Vero Beach, Fla. Kirkwood won the opener 3-2. Cooper Robinson of Mystic led off the bottom of the 10th. Mike Chiovitti put down a sacrifice bunt and, when the pitcher threw the ball away, Robinson raced all the way home with the game-winner. East Lyme's C.J. Leindecker went the first seven innings, allowing two hits with six strikeouts and a walk. Joe Nemchek (1-0) got the win, allowing one hit over three innings with three strikeouts and two walks.

In the opener, Waterford's Mike Rocchetti had two of Avery Point's three hits The Pointers (2-2) avoided the shutout with two runs in the top of the seventh. Vinny Pallisco tripled home Chiovitti and came around to score the second run.     

Men's tennis

• Connecticut College won its first match of the season with a 9-0 win over Westminster in Hilton Head, S.C. Johnny Cissell at No. 3 singles and William Feigert at No. 6 each won their matches 6-0, 6-0 while Ben Sachs at No. 1 and Patrick Farrell (No. 4) each won 6-0, 6-1. Conn is 1-1.

Women's tennis

• Junior Aleksandra Drljaca won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to highlight Conn College's 9-0 win over previously unbeaten Westminster at Hilton Head, S.C. Stephanie Simon, Angelica Warren, Mariah Warren, Susanna Studwell and Hayley Zukerberg were also straight-set winners for the Camels (2-0). Westminster is 12-1.
