After the success of last year’s holiday stroll, the Velvet Mill in Stonington is hosting a May Day festival this weekend, including an art show featuring works from Ledyard High School students.

Janine Logue, a member of the Velvet Mill committee and owner of Enchanted Wishes, said the mill has a vibrant artist population. She rents a studio in the facility for her business, where she creates custom birthday parties for girls and sells handmade items with whimsical themes such as fairies and princesses.

She said the May Day festival is designed to bring together the resident artists and the greater community, as well as the other Velvet Mill vendors such as Beer’d Brewing and Zest Bakery. The event will also include dancers and music by the Seraphim Consort.

Keeping the artistic tie in mind, Logue said she reached out to area schools for student artists interested in showing off their work, but Ledyard High School was the only school she heard back from.

Art teacher Marin Marciano said Logue has been very helpful with orchestrating the show, from framing and labeling to setting up the space.

About 15 students, ranging from freshmen in the Art 1 class to seniors with art portfolios, will submit their pieces for the festival.

They will also be at the festival to talk about their spring-themed works, which are mostly paintings with a few sculptures as well.

“I think it’s definitely worth it,” she said. “Ledyard students are really eager to show off their work.”

The festival starts at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 28, with the entertainment and art show beginning around 5 p.m.

The Velvet Mill is located at 22 Bayview Ave. in Stonington Borough.
