Second man pleads guilty in Mohegan Sun player-dealer larceny

A former Mohegan Sun dealer and player have pleaded guilty to conspiring to cheat the casino out of approximately $130,000 last year at roulette tables.

Casino patron Joseph P. Marotta, 37, of Danielson, pleaded guilty Monday in New London Superior Court to second-degree larceny in exchange for a sentence of five years probation and an order to repay a third of the money stolen in the scheme. Marrotta made a $20,000 restitution payment on Monday and Judge Hillary B. Strackbein said as she imposed the sentence that the Department of Adult Probation would determine the balance of his payment.

"Luckily there's going to be no jail," the judge said. "In this case, money will fix it."

The dealer, Christian Elwood, 41, of Wallingford, pleaded guilty last month to second-degree larceny. He also received a fully suspended prison sentence, five years of probation and an order to repay a third of the casino's total loss.

The case of a second casino patron Jeremy P. Howard, 41, of Southington is pending. His next court date is Oct. 17.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit and statements made in court, Marrotta had attended high school with Elwood and become reacquainted with him after Elwood started working at the casino 15 years ago. Marrotta said that while discussing "financial difficulties," Elwood told him about a scheme in which he overpayed a patron and then got "a piece of the action."

In May 2016, Elwood intentionally overpaid both Marrotta and Howard and falsified information in casino's records about the players, then received money back for his part in the scheme, according to the state.
