Democrats seize control of Norwich Board of Education
Norwich — While losing the mayor's seat and the majority of the City Council, Democrats took control of the Board of Education on Tuesday, with the maximum 6-3 majority, fueled by longtime incumbents and newcomers.
Longtime Democratic members Yvette Jacaruso and Joyce Werden and Robert Aldi were re-elected with strong vote tallies, along with newcomer Democrats James Maloney, Mark Kulos and Heather Romanski.
Current Republican Chairman Aaron “Al” Daniels retained his seat, along with incumbent Dennis Slopak and newcomer Patricia Staley.
The nine-member board, currently a 5-4 Republican majority, was guaranteed a new look after two incumbents ran for City Council and one did not run for re-election.
Republicans pressed the need to balance the needs of the schools with the needs of taxpayers for lower property taxes in Norwich, while Democrats stressed that the needs of the schools and city students had to come first.
