East Lyme — Staffers on Tuesday morning thwarted an inmate’s attempt to escape the York Correctional Institution, according to the state Department of Correction.

Officials said Caitlin Roncalli, 24, of Suffield got access to the prisoner yard about 4:45 a.m. and began climbing the perimeter fence. Staff members saw Roncalli and notified yard personnel, who quickly detained Roncalli, according to state police.

Police said Roncalli did not make it outside the fence. Staffers placed her in secure housing and called troopers to the scene.

Roncalli, charged with first-degree escape from a correctional institution, was given a $25,000 bond and turned back over to the DOC.

Records show Roncalli was admitted to York Monday after Southington police arrested and charged her with carrying a dangerous weapon, among other things. She was unable to post an approximately $7,500 bond. Her next court date in that case is Nov. 29.

Roncalli was due in New London Superior Court on Tuesday to be arraigned on her most recent charge.

According to DOC officials, the last successful escape from a secured state DOC facility happened in 1992.

Officials have placed York on lockdown so police and the DOC’s Security Division can complete their investigation.
