Stonington — Max Wojtas scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Jamison Magowan with 17 minutes remaining Wednesday, as the third-seeded Stonington High School boys' soccer team came from behind to top No. 19 Tolland 2-1 in the second round of the Class M state tournament.

Stonington, which trailed 1-0 at halftime, advanced to Friday's quarterfinal round, where the unbeaten Bears (19-0-1) will meet No. 6 Ellington beginning at 2 p.m. in Stonington.

Jason Kilcoyne evened the score for Stonington, heading in the ball on an assist by Cam Whalen with 23 minutes remaining in the game, setting up Wojtas for the game-winner. Coach Paul deCastro said goalie Adam Gibbs (four saves) made a couple stops in the first half that helped turn the momentum in the Bears' favor.

"It was wild," deCastro said. "The game got really physical. We had to raise our intensity level. ... In the first half, Tolland was the better team. In the second half, we were the better team.

"We usually play a pretty good style, but we had to grind it out and play a little more physical. Getting it to 1-1 was a great one. Once we got there, we had momentum. ... The boys were ecstatic after the game."

In other second-round games:

• Nick Yetifshesky scored the game’s first goal with 20 minutes remaining as No. 28 RHAM downed No. 21 East Lyme 3-0 in Class L. Dakota Stone and Giovani Vecchiarinno scored and James Abu-Rahmeh had three saves for the Sachems. Sean Heaney had five saves for East Lyme (8-9-3).

Girls' soccer

• Audrey Matson scored on an assist from Grace Powell and Olivia Guinan made 10 saves for The Williams School in a 1-1 overtime tie with St. Andrews in the SENE championship game. The teams were declared co-champions. Guinan stopped a breakaway with seven minutes remaining in regulation to preserve the tie. Williams (7-5-4) trailed 1-0 at halftime.

H.S. volleyball

• Fifth-seeded Valley Regional held off No. 12 Waterford 25-12, 25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 15-11 in a Class M second-round match. Seniors Sidney Hauser, Casey Kozlowski and Molly Kosma led Waterford (15-8), which rallied from a two-game deficit to beat Woodland in the first round.

• Sixth-seeded Coginchaug beat No. 11 Norwich Tech 25-17, 25-11, 25-7 in a Class S second-round match. Norwich Tech finished 16-8.

Men’s basketball

• Steven Fletcher of Ledyard scored 18 as Avery Point edged Gateway Community College in its season-opener on Tuesday night, 68-67. New London’s Tyrel Martinez had 12 points and six rebounds for the Pointers and Jacee Hamlin added 16 points and eight assists.

Women's basketball

• Egypt Santos had 18 points and 16 rebounds to lead five players in double figures in UConn Avery Point's 92-74 season-opening victory over Gateway Community College on Tuesday night. Meg Bianchi added 17 points and eight assists for the Pointers, Sha'La Jones and Hannah LeBeau each contributed 13 points and Stonington's Taty LaFrance Boyce had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Waterford's Mia Brennan was a defensive presence and contributed eight points, six rebounds and six assists.
