Two arrested on heroin charges in Groton

Groton — Members of the Regional Community Enhancement Task Force and Groton Police Department on Thursday arrested two 26-year-old Groton residents on heroin charges, police said in a news release on Friday.

Rashon Saunders of 71 Branford Ave. has been charged with possession of heroin, sale of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to sell, risk of injury to a minor, criminal possession of a firearm, improper storage of a firearm, stealing/obtaining a firearm, criminal possession of ammunition and possession of hallucinogen.

Cody Belanger-Marlow of 110 B St. has been charged with possession of heroin.

Regional Community Enhancement Task Force members were patrolling the parking lot of a business on Gold Star Highway when they noticed suspicious activity in a car, according to police.

The officers approached the car and saw that Saunders, the driver, had narcotics on his lap, police said. It was later determined that he also had heroin packaged for sale, MDMA — known popularly as ecstasy — and cash.

Belanger-Marlow had just purchased heroin from Saunders, police said. Also in the car was a sleeping infant.

Police determined that Saunders was on parole and later found a handgun in his home that was stolen, loaded and not properly secured, according to the news release.

Saunders was held on a $250,000 bond while Belanger-Marlow was released on a $5,000 nonsurety bond. Both are due to appear in court on Nov. 28.
