Salem — State police late Wednesday arrested a town man they said caused a disturbance at his Fairy Lake Road residence while intoxicated and armed with an AR-15 rifle.

Erich Murphy, 44, of 78 Fairy Lake Road was charged with illegally carrying a firearm under the influence of alcohol or drugs, risk of injury to a minor and disorderly conduct.

Police said they responded to the residence just before midnight for the report of a man causing problems while intoxicated and armed. As police traveled to the residence, they learned from dispatchers that two adults and two children in the home had locked themselves in a bathroom to avoid Murphy.

According to police, Murphy forced his way into the bathroom and spoke with one of the adults as the other three occupants left the residence. The caller told police Murphy was making statements against law enforcement and himself.

On arrival, police took Murphy into custody and transported him to the Troop K barracks.

Released on a $15,000 surety bond, Murphy was due in Norwich Superior Court on Thursday morning.
