CGA men beat Maine-Presque Island for seventh straight win

New London — Micah and Noah Baldez combined for 40 points as the Coast Guard Academy men's basketball team returned from a brief holiday break to win its seventh straight game with a 76-68 victory over Maine-Presque Isle on Friday afternoon.

    Micah scored a game-high 21 points for the Bears (7-1) while Noah added a career-high 19.

Coast Guard's 7-1 start is the program's best since 2008-09 when the Bears began the season with nine straight wins. They won 13 straight during the 2007-08 season, a streak that was snapped in the NCAA Division III tournament's Elite Eight.

Coast Guard used a 15-2 run in the first half turning to open a 28-13 advantage with 8:15 left in the first half. The Bears led 43-26 at the break, shooting 50 percent (19 of 38) from the floor.

Maine-Presque Isle (4-6) had a run of its own, outscoring the Bears 15-1 in the second half to close within four, 61-57, with 5:54 remaining. A key 3-pointer by Micah Baldez with 1:11 left gave Coast Guard a 69-63 lead, and Noah Baldez hit a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left to ice the win.

Micah Baldez also had eight rebounds for the Bears as did junior Bryce Schroeder (a career high).

Coast Guard is back home on Sunday to face Salve Regina in a non-conference game at 1 p.m.
