Coast Guard Spirit of the Bear Awards
Objee, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's bear mascot, greets members of the corps of cadets gathered for the presentation of the academy's 10th annual Spirit of the Bear Awards Monday, January 8, 2018 in the Roland Hall gymnasium.
The awards, named for the academy's mascot, recognize members of the academy community; military and civilian, academic faculty, professional staff, athletic coaches, EAGLE crew members, and other members of the broader Academy community who exemplify the very best in mentoring and developing cadets into Leaders of Character.
This year the Admiral James M. Loy Institute for Leadership received over 300 nominations for 80 individuals.
The eight awards were given to: football assistant coach Jay Driscoll, BM3 Norman Gladfelter, EAGLE, Prof Melissa Matthes, Humanities, LCDR Jayna McCarron, Alfa Company Officer, CAPT Matthew Meilstrup, EAGLE, LT Sarah (Katie) Shveda, Professional Maritime Studies, Prof William Simpson, Naval Architecture, and LT Nicholas Zieser, Management.
