Groton — The UPS Store in Groton Square Shopping Center closed on Friday, but UPS' goal is to open another location in Groton quickly, according to company spokeswoman Tracy Spahr.

The store is an independently owned and operated franchise, and all Spahr could say about the reason for closing was that it was "unforeseen." She said UPS has some prospects for finding a franchisee who wants to open in Groton.

Signs taped to the windows of the UPS Store — which had been open since April 2005 — direct customers to different locations for different purposes.

Mailbox customers can visit the post office at 100 Plaza Court, which will be holding and distributing mail for 30 days. Access Point customers can pick up their packages at the Bozrah UPS Customer Center at 180 Fitchville Road, open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Anyone who is part of a vendor return program and has been instructed to return an item to The UPS Store can visit the nearest store at 24 W Main St. in Clinton, 800 Village Walk in Guilford or 92 Point Judith Road in Narragansett, R.I.

For shipping needs, the nearest UPS Customer Center is at 976 Hartford Turnpike in Waterford.

Other local businesses that accept UPS packages include Staples, Pak It in Waterford, The Parcel Centre in East Lyme, and Mystic Mailbox.
