Inmate death under investigation at York Correctional Institution

East Lyme — State police and the Department of Correction are investigating the death of a 53-year-old inmate who was found unresponsive Sunday morning at the Janet S. York Correctional Institution.

Joyce Salters had been held at the women's prison in lieu of $100,000 bond since May 2. She was arrested by New Haven police and charged with stealing a firearm and carrying a pistol without a permit.

Early details of the case are not indicative of suicide or foul play, according to Department of Correction spokeswoman Karen Martucci, who said the case is under investigation by state police and the DOC's security division.

The state Office of the Chief Medical examiner said the cause of death is pending further studies.
