    Local roundup: Whalen to compete in two events at New England track and field meet

    Stonington High School's Cam Whalen is scheduled to compete in both hurdle events during Saturday's New England Track and Field Championships at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.

    Whalen, a senior, is seeded third in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.60 seconds and ninth in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 39.61 seconds. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

    Whalen will be joined by teammates Rhys Hammond, who will complete in the 800-meter race with a qualifying time of 1:53.96, and Joe Hinckley, who will compete in the pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches).

    Norwich Free Academy, the Eastern Connecticut Conference champion, is scheduled to send the most local competitors in the boys' competition (four). Osarantin Osagie will compete in the 110 high hurdles (15.20), Brenden Sholes in the high jump (6-4), Chris Weir in the pole vault (14-0) and Chris Hebert in the javelin (171-9).

    Other boys' qualifiers include Waterford's Shayne Beckloff in the 100 dash (11.04), Ledyard's Collin Wiltshire in the triple jump (45-1.25) and East Lyme's 4x800 relay team of Sam Whittaker, Matthew Kung, Chris Abbey and Ryan McCauley (8:05.45).

    Local qualifiers in the girls' competition include Waterford's Sophia Podeszwa in the 300 hurdles (45.30), NFA's Allyson Lewis in the high jump (5-4), NFA's Paige Martin in the pole vault (11-0), Fitch's Colleen Duffy in the discus (114-3) and the Falcons' 4x100 relay team of Lily Johnson, Madison Powe, Janaya Burley and Abigail Rogers (50.37).

    H.S. golf

    • Waterford's Caroline Petchark will be the lone ECC golfer in the field for the CIAC Open Championship on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Black Hall Club in Old Lyme. Petchark won her first ECC girls' title last month at Quinnatisset Country Club in Thompson, firing a 38 in the nine-hole tournament. She finished 11th in the girls' state tournament on Tuesday. Other girls playing on Saturday: Alyssa Maiolo, Ridgefield; Bridget Barnsley, Amity; Elizabeth Fell, Fairfield Warde; Meghan Mitchell, Morgan Hibbert, New Canaan.

    The boys' field includes: Alexander Aurora, Hamden; Alexander Gu, Darien; Anthony Bouvier, Notre Dame-Fairfield; Calvin Smith, Darien; Maxwell Chubet, Cameron Zegzdryn, Southington; Chris Fosdick, Xavier; Colin Cusa, Tristan Hochman, Staples; Jack Boatwright, Fairfield Ludlowe; Jackson Fretty, Greenwich; Jacob Lindsay, Berlin; Kyle Savino, Old Saybrook; Kyle St. Pierre, Shelton; Luke Carroll, Matthew Chorches, Conard; Mac Mahoney, Hall; Matthew Doyle, Daniel Hand; Michael Hanratty, Tyler Hahn, Cole Hahn, Avon; Stephen Vincelette, Portland; Tyler Woodward, Coginchaug; William Mallek, Fairfield Prep.

    Black Hall has hosted several state tournaments in the past, including the Connecticut PGA Championship, Connecticut Amateur Championship, Connecticut Open and Connecticut Women's Open.

    College basketball

    • UConn will face former Big East rival Syracuse in the first round of the 2018 2K Classic benefiting the Wounded Warriors Project on Nov. 15 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The news was first reported by FanRag Sports. Iowa will play Oregon in the other first round game. Winners and losers will meet on Nov. 16. It will be the fourth straight season that UConn and Syracuse play. The Orange won 72-63 last December in New York.

    College football

    • UConn coach Randy Edsall announced his team's leadership council for the 2018 season: Ryan Crozier, Tyler Davis, Keyion Dixon, Omar Fortt, Eddie Hahn, Hergy Mayala, Kevin Murphy, Matt Peart, David Pindell, Zavier Scott, Marshe Terry, Eli Thomas and Donovan Williams.

    Road racing

    • Frank Balantic of Niantic won the Niantic Bay 10K, finishing in a time of 38:34. Westerly's Jeffrey Vuono was second in 39:30 and Erin Almand of Carthage, N.C., the top women's finisher, was third in 39:38.

    Also finishing in the top 10 were Brendan Tierney of Niantic (40:18), Tom Provencher of East Lyme (41:13), Brian Whitney of Niantic (41:27), Charlie Olibrias of Willimantic (42:07), Austin Almand of Carthage, N.C. (42:25), Michael Bear of Colchester (42:35) and Michael Brown of Gales Gerry (42:41).
