Groton Senior Center seeks participants for first Bakers Battle

Groton — The Groton Senior Center is seeking both professional and recreational bakers – 18 and older – to participate in its inaugural Bakers Battle, to be held at its 102 Newtown Road location on Saturday, July 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Participating bakers need to come to the event with four-dozen miniatures of whatever they've made – such as mini cupcakes, slices of pie or cookies – along with three-dozen full-sized baked goods for judging and sale.

Office assistant Jennifer Meakem said the judges will be Kevin Hogan, New London bureau chief for WFSB, and representatives from Visiting Angels and Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, the sponsors.

Professional bakers and recreational bakers are competing in separate divisions, and all proceeds raised will support senior center programming.

Meakem said the professional winner will get a year's worth of free advertising in Discover 55+, the senior center's bimonthly newsletter that gets mailed to more than 19,000 homes.

The recreational winner can come and teach a class on his or her baking specialty. Both will also be featured in Discover 55+.

Those interested in participating can contact program supervisor Kathy Williams at kwilliams@groton-ct.gov or 860-441-6795.
