    Music tip: Composer Ruth Barrett

    Music tip

    Composer Ruth Barrett

More than once, scholars, critics and composers have laughed heartily — and, to be honest, kicked me with work boots — over my earnest observation that original film and television scores are "the new classical music." Bloody and bruised but not bowed, I stand firmly in the conviction that it's possible I'm not completely wrong! In any case, I love the work of British composer Ruth Barrett, whose the brilliant and oft-heartbreaking melodist behind scores for "Harry Brown," "White Chapel," "City of Tiny Lights" and, of late, the dark, seductive crime series "Collateral."
