Groton — A second son of the plumber charged this month in a botched East Lyme boiler installation is facing charges related to unlicensed plumbing work, court documents show.

Ryan Gregory Benoit, 42, of 5 Over Brook Road, East Lyme, is due back in New London Superior Court on Monday on charges he took money from a Mystic woman to install a boiler in her home but never did the work.

Ryan Benoit is the son of Gregory Benoit, who was charged June 1 with having another son, Aaron, do unlicensed work on a boiler in East Lyme. Aaron Benoit also was arrested for his alleged role in installing the boiler, which functioned improperly and sent an East Lyme resident to the hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning.

An affidavit says Ryan Benoit presented himself as a licensed plumber when he went to Lauren Allyn’s Mystic home Oct. 27, 2016. Benoit allegedly said the boiler would cost $1,450 and asked for half the money up front.

Allyn told police Ryan Benoit asked for another $1,000 the next day. He said he had looked over the job with his father and realized more parts were needed, she said.

After she gave him the money, Allyn said, Ryan Benoit never came back and he stopped returning her calls.

Town police Officer Kimberly Snyder, who wrote the affidavit, said Ryan Benoit is not a licensed contractor. She said his father and a third brother, Jamie, said they weren’t aware of the Mystic project.

Snyder said Ryan Benoit called her on Nov. 16, 2016, and said he “just got behind on things.” Snyder gave him one day to repay Allyn, the affidavit says, and he failed to do so.

Police obtained a warrant for Ryan Benoit's arrest and on Feb. 5 this year charged him with fourth-degree larceny and two counts of violation of home improvement contract requirements.

Ryan Benoit, who is free on bond, has several other pending cases. He allegedly issued a bad check in August 2016 and kicked in a door at his on-again, off-again girlfriend’s home in September 2017.

Ryan Benoit also was charged Feb. 5 in relation to an August 2017 crash in Waterford. Police said he evaded the scene and used one of his brother’s names and Social Security numbers when police found and pulled him over. Police said Ryan Benoit's license was suspended at the time of the crash.

His most recent arrest came June 6 in Waterford, when police charged him with two counts of second-degree failure to appear in court after they say he missed a May 24 court date.

All of his cases are scheduled to be addressed in court Monday.
