Stonington's Smith wins state decathlon title
Manchester — Stonington's Shane Smith captured the CIAC state decathlon championship on Wednesday at Manchester High School.
The senior, who began Day 2 of the grueling two-day, 10-event competition in fourth place, used top five finishes in three of the five events contested Wednesday to win the title with 5,791 points. Ellington's Joshua Prouty finished second with 5,714 and Fitch sophomore Ethan Alves wound up 25th with 3,833.
Smith finished second in the pole vault (12 feet, 11.5 inches), third in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.14 seconds) and fourth in the discus (121-1) to move his way to the top. He also also placed seventh in the javelin (129-8) and ninth in the 1,500 (5:01.96) to complete the final day.
Alves' best finish on Day 2 was a 12th in the 110 hurdles (18.22).
The CIAC heptathlon, a two-day, seven-event competition, was also won be an Eastern Connecticut Conference athlete as Griswold senior Kalli'Ana Botelho won the state title with 4,149 points. Montville junior Lauren Ross finished 12th with 3,219 points and Stonington freshman Kaleigh Bolduc wound up 22nd with 2,954 points.
Ross' best finish on Day 2 was 13th in the javelin (67-11) and Bolduc's top finish was also in the javelin (12th, 68-1).
Two boys' individual state titles were also decided with Nonnewaug's Elias Field winning the 2,000 steeplechase in 6:34.97 and St. Paul's Christian Sturm capturing the hammer throw with a heave of 187-7. Four locals competed in the steeplechase: Waterford's Sam Lenes (34th, 7:27.97), Fitch's Jake McCarty (50th, 7:48.39), Stonington's Elias Dahl (51st, 7:49.20) and Fitch's Dan Gaiewski (56th, 7:56.64).
