    Local roundup: OL's Funaro, Waterford's Sutman earn pair of state baseball honors

    Old Lyme's Jace Funaro and Waterford's Walker Sutman earned a pair of state baseball honors by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association.

    The two seniors were named CHSCA All-Academic team as well as being named first team all-state selections, Funaro in Class S and Sutman in Class L.

    Sutman was joined on the Class L all-state team by teammate Mike Burrows, a recent draft pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and New London infielder Elijah Martinez.

    Other local players earning all-state baseball honors were Montville's Doug Delacruz, Stonington's Kevin Ferrer and Ledyard's Ken Turner, all in Class M.

    All-state teams in three other sports were also announced this week.

    Softball — Class LL first team: NFA's Bailey Comeau, Hailee Schrader and Shea Gendron; Class M first team: Montville's Alexis Michon, Stonington's Abby Flakus; Class S first team: St. Bernard's Briana Beverly.

    Boys' lacrosse — Class M first team: Waterford's Caleb Holdridge (attack), Waterford's Logan Bowdish (midfield); Class M second team: East Lyme's Rob Swenson (attack), East Lyme's Andrew Alden (midfield), Waterford's Kevin Close (defense), East Lyme's Andrew Noorgian (defense); Class S first team: Old Lyme's Mike Kolesnik (midfield), Montville's Sam Kury (face-off); Class S second team: St. Bernard/Wheeler's Pat Brady (attack), Stonington's Max Mueller (midfield), St. Bernard/Wheeler's Scott Pion (midfield), St. Bernard/Wheeler's Emmett Brady (defense), Old Lyme's Henry Lahm (defense); Academic All-American: East Lyme's Isaac Tomblin; Class S Coach of the Year: St. Bernard/Wheeler's Kyle Legnos.

    Girls' lacrosse — Class M first team: East Lyme's Karlie Rowe (attack), East Lyme's Laura Agbayani (defense); Class M second team: Fitch's Maggie O'Leary (attack); Class S first team: Stonington's Hannah Lamb (attack), Waterford's Jacklyn Lavoie (attack), Ledyard's Megan Larmann (midfield), Old Lyme's Lydia Tinnerello (midfield), Stonington's Lexi Woviotis (defense); Class S second team: Old Lyme's Anna Sather (attack), Stonington's Kate Johnson (midfield), Waterford's Olivia Gianakos (midfield), Old Lyme's Daisy Colvin (midfield), Old Lyme's Samantha Owen (defense), Old Lyme's Emily Rivera (defense), Old Lyme's Emily Erne (goalie). 

    NECBL

    • Three pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Mystic Schooners beat the Danbury Westerners 4-0 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game. Starter Jonathan Signore (Fairfield) and relievers Matt Geoffrion (Maine) and Anthony Garcia (Wofford) struck out six and walked five. Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) and Freddy Sabido (Wagner) homered and Chris Winkel (UConn) had two hits for the Schooners (2-5). 

    Junior Legion Zone 6

    • Ashton Fontaine drove in both Niantic runs during a 3-2 loss to Willimantic. Sam Richardson allowed only three hits over 6.2 innings for Niantic.

    District 10 softball (10-12)

    • Anna Dziecinny doubled and tripled as Waterford beat East Lyme 10-0 in five innings. Dziecinny was also the winning pitcher, striking out 12. Sam SanJuan singled, tripled and drove in a run and Grace Muti and Marina Colonis had extra-base hits for Waterford. Abby Robinson of East Lyme struck out four.
