A Ledyard woman is looking for help with her volunteer search for Sofia McKenna, the 21-year-old North Stonington woman who remains missing after a May 27 boating mishap off Avery Point in Groton.

The Coast Guard called off a search for McKenna and Spencer Mugford, 20, of Farmington and Westerly, on May 28. They were last seen leaving Avery Point in the early morning hours of May 27 aboard a 14-foot sailboat bound for Ledge Light. Mumford’s body was found June 8 in Long Island Sound southeast of Avery Point. The sailboat was located on a beach in Orient Point, N.Y., on May 28.

Lisa Garner of Ledyard, a family friend of McKenna, said that since the Coast Guard called off the search, a small group of people, who have now dwindled to about five, have been spending 10-12 hours a day wading in the shallow water along the Groton and New London shoreline looking for McKenna.

“We don’t want to give up hope, she said Sunday. “The family is worried that that people will forget (that McKenna is still missing).”

She said she is looking for people with boats to assist with the search and for property owners to give them access to their shoreline so they can search under docks and in the shallow water. She said there has been some resistance by some property owners because they do now know who the searchers are.

“We won’t damage anyone’s property. We just want to get in and out and search,” she said.

Garner said that McKenna, who worked at the Red Door Spa at the Mystic Marriott, went to check out the lighthouse with Mugford, because there are rumors it is haunted.

“What happened after that is just speculation. We just don’t know,” she said.
