Rotella, Donahue to face off in July 16 debate in North Stonington

North Stonington _ A debate between the two candidates seeking to be chosen at an August 14 primary to be the Democratic candidate for the 43rd District state representative seat, will be held Monday July 16 at 7 p.m. at the new Emergency Services Building.

The debate is being sponsored by the North Stonington Democratic Town Committee and the League of Women Voters.

Town committee Chairwoman Toula Balestracci said that Stonington Selectwoman Kate Rotella, who was endorsed at the party caucus, has confirmed she will attend. While she said Rotella’s challenger, Democrat Chris Donahue of Pawcatuck had indicated he had a work conflict that night, Donahue said Monday that he has been able to change his schedule and will attend the debate.

Balestracci said the candidates will be asked 10 questions submitted in writing from the audience.

“Because both candidates are from Stonington we thought it would be a good idea to bring them to North Stonington so residents can meet them,” Balestracci said.

Donahue said that he and Rotella are also discussing the scheduling of a debate in Stonington.

The 43rd District is comprised of Stonington and North Stonington. The winner of the upcoming primary will face Republican Shaun Mastroianni in November with the winner filling the seat vacated by nine-term Democratic incumbent Diana Urban of North Stonington.
