Ledyard — Police charged a Ledyard man with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and other charges after they say he crashed his motorcycle on Sandy Hollow Road, hid behind a tree and became combative when police found him.

Ledyard police said Daniel Diciccio, who lives at 70 Whalehead Road, drove his motorcycle into a wooded area near the intersection of Sandy Hollow Road and Whalehead Road about 2 a.m. Saturday. After two witnesses saw him bleeding from an injury he suffered in the crash, he walked into the woods.

Ledyard police, with the help of a Norwich Police Department K-9 unit, found Diciccio “hiding behind a large tree” about 25 yards into the woods from Sandy Hollow Road. Police said he became combative and was escorted out of the woods so he could be taken to the William W. Backus Hospital, where he refused treatment.

Ledyard police Lt. Kenneth Creutz said police did not conduct a breath test but charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs "based on the totality of circumstances" and were working to seize evidence to further support the charge.

In addition to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police charged him with failure to drive in the established lane and evading responsibility.
