Last week: NFA defeated Xavier 26-13; Prep defeated Notre Dame-West Haven 41-20

Outlook: The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Wildcats, who get perennial SCC power Prep this week. Prep quarterback JP Iaropoli threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns last week, while Doug Harrison, an injured running back who gained more than 1,000 yards as a sophomore, returned for the Jesuits. Notre Dame scored all its points against Prep’s second-team defense last week. … Quarterback Elijah Parker threw a pair of touchdown passes for NFA last week to Andrew Cote and Nolan Molkenthin before Cameron Belton’s fumble return sealed the game.

Valley Reg./Old Lyme at Morgan, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Valley (1-0); Morgan (0-1)

Last week: Valley defeated Ellington 42-6; Morgan lost to Stafford/East Windsor/Somers 39-26

Outlook: Nick Braga scored on runs of 82 (kickoff return) and 69 yards last week to lead the Warriors. Quarterback Jack Cox threw for 130 yards and a 32-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Watrous. The Warriors rolled to more than 300 yards of offense.

Branford at Stonington, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Branford (1-0); Stonington (0-1)

Last week: Branford defeated Lyman Hall 26-21; Stonington lost to Montville 28-7

Outlook: Both teams share at least one theme: Youth. Branford was able to overcome it last week, while the Bears did not. … Branford hasn’t had a winning season in nearly 10 years. It returns six seniors this year. Stonington scored first last week at Montville before allowing the game’s final 28 points.

East Lyme at Pomperaug, 6:30 p.m.

Records: East Lyme (0-1); Pomperaug (1-0)

Last week: East Lyme lost to Norwalk 41-24; Pomperaug defeated Bethel 46-0

Outlook: East Lyme had a lead for a while last week against speedy Norwalk, before succumbing in the second half. … Pomperaug, without a winning season since 2011, began well last week. The Panthers replace seven starters on both offense and defense, including quarterback, where converted running back Troy Harwell gets this year’s duty. 

Guilford at Waterford, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Guilford (0-0); Waterford (1-0)

Last week: Guilford was idle; Waterford defeated Ledyard 14-13

Outlook: The Lancers snapped a 10-game losing streak last week, working out many typical first-week issues. They may have the advantage here, given that Guilford was idle last week. … Guilford lost quarterback Jack Strand early last season, giving this year’s starter, Ethan Vashel, quite a bit of experience. Seniors Miles Gabriel and Tyler Filley are his favorite passing targets. The Indians, however, graduated all of their top rushers.

Montville at Lyman Hall, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Montville (1-0); Lyman Hall (0-1)

Last week: Montville defeated Stonington 28-7; Lyman Hall lost to Branford 26-21

Outlook: Montville dominated on both sides of the line last week, while four different players rushed for touchdowns, including junior quarterback Ryan Douchette (one yard), junior Frank Cook (seven), senior Dominic Emmons (13) and junior Jayden Long (15). … Lyman Hall was competitive with Branford, but got flagged for more than 100 yards in penalties, including two personal fouls. Shakespeare Rodriguez scored a defensive touchdown for the Trojans.

Fitch at Harding, 7 p.m.

Records: Fitch (0-1); Harding (0-1)

Last week: Fitch lost to Hamden 6-0; Harding lost to Amity 26-8

Outlook: It’s very likely that Fitch coach Mike Ellis had his players’ attention this week, following the dreadful, penalty-filled loss to Hamden. The Falcons get a Harding team that christened a new turf field last week, but managed only 168 yards of offense against Amity. If there’s such a thing as a must win game in week two, this one is close for Fitch.

Ledyard at Bunnell, 7 p.m.

Records: Ledyard (0-1); Bunnell (1-0)

Last week: Ledyard lost to Waterford 14-13; Bunnell defeated New Fairfield 34-0

Outlook: It doesn’t get easier for the Colonels, who missed a chance to tie Waterford late last week. Now they hit the road against a team that pitched a shutout last week. Christ N’Dabian ran for touchdowns from 56 and 58 yards last week.

New London at Notre Dame-West Haven, 7:30 p.m.

Records: New London (1-0); ND-WH (0-1)

Last week: New London defeated Capital/AF 20-7; ND-WH lost to Fairfield Prep 41-20

Outlook: Optimism abounds right now at New London, where the Whalers played well last week in the win over Capital/AF. Now they see a team with a big name and tradition, although one that struggled last year and in week one. The Green Knights scored their points last week against Fairfield Prep’s second-team defense. … This game has been moved to the field at Law of Milford.

Saturday’s game

Thames River at Wilcox Tech, 1 p.m.

Records: Thames River (1-0); Wilcox Tech (1-0)

Last week: Thames River defeated Platt Tech 14-6; Wilcox Tech defeated MCW 34-8

Outlook: Logan Starr had four carries for 55 yards and a touchdown while Cole Occhiolino scored in the second half for the Crusaders. Eddie Cruse had six tackles for Thames River, including two sacks and a forced fumble.
