New London — Charlie Ritchie, director of The Fireboat Fire Fighter Museum, explains the operation of the two diesel engines aboard the historic fireboat to Dave Simpson and his grandchildren Drew Palmieri, 9, and Kaylee Palmieri, 5, on Saturday.
Fire Fighter, a former Fire Department of the City of New York fireboat from 1938 to 2010, sailed from its homeport of Greenport, N.Y., to New London for last week's Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival, is docked at Custom House Pier and will be open for free tours Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
