    The Lonesome Polecat (state variant)

    Howdy,

The late, great Robert James Marella, otherwise known as Gorilla Monsoon, had several phrases he was fond of repeating. One of his best was, “he’s not quick — he’s sudden.”

Shelton was very sudden in last Thursday’s 38-7 win over Xavier.

The Gaels got the ball back with under a minute left in the first half at their own 18-yard line leading 28-0. The offense came out on the field and lined everyone in tight to run a power play.

That Shelton was in a power formation was worth noting because it runs a wide-open spread offense and does it well. Thus the assumption was that Shelton was going to run out the clock.

“The coaches said, ‘we’re not running the clock,’” Gaels Jack Carr said. “‘Run, score and get into the locker room.’

“I was like, ‘alright.’ And I went.”

Carr ran for an 82-yard touchdown with 33 seconds left in the half.

“We’ve been working on that short yardage offense,” Shelton head coach Jeff Roy laughed. “We got it wide there, he had some lead blockers out there and, again, any time Carr carries the ball, we have a shot (to score). If there’s a seam, he’s hitting yet.

“Yeah, we’ve been practicing our short yardage offense. It worked pretty well.”

It was one of three second-quarter drives in which the Gaels scored quickly. They began a drive that quarter at their own 31-yard line.

Jake Roberts (no, not that Jake Roberts) hooked up with David Yakowicz for a 28-yard pass on first down. Roberts followed with a 17-yard keeper. He threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Yakowicz on the next play to give Shelton a 14-0 lead.

    Three plays. 69 yards. Touchdown.

Carr ran for a 60-yard touchdown on the second play of another drive, giving the Gaels a 28-0 lead with 6 minutes, 18 seconds left in the half.

Carr had three carries for 146 yards and two touchdowns for Shelton (2-0), ranked fifth in The Day Top 10 state coaches’ poll. He also had two catches for 60 yards and a touchdown and a sack.

Roberts completed 9 of 18 passes for 202 yards with two touchdowns and an interception and ran seven times for 66 yards.

Yakowicz had five catches for 102 yards and a score.

The Gaels also used their speed on defense to stuff Xavier. They allowed just 17 yards on 12 carries in the first half and 38 yards of offense.

“That’s two weeks in a row where our front seven played well,” Roy said. “(We’re) moving (players) around and stemming and slanting and getting after it up front. We’ve got some aggressive kids and, yeah, our defense has been great the last couple of weeks.”

Shelton beat Cheshire, 17-10, in Week 2.

“We’re trying to mix things up and utilize our speed,” Roy said. “We’re not huge. We have some good, strong kids, but we’re trying to utilize our strength and aggressiveness by bringing different guys down in the box at different times. It showed here tonight. The defense was tremendous in the first half.”

Fairfield Prep quarterback JP Iaropoli was telling a reporter Friday night, after he helped lead the Jesuits to a 24-12 victory over Norwich Free Academy, that he believes his team can be No. 1 in the state by the end of the season.

“Let me correct JP,” Fairfield coach Keith Hellstern said a few moments later. “We want to be the No. 1 team every day in practice so we can be the No. 1 team on the day we play. We have high goals, but we want to keep within our process.”

Iaropoli was 14-for-24 for 140 yards and a touchdown. The Jesuits, ranked 13th in The Day's coaches' poll, were also led by senior running back Doug Harrison, with 22 carries for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Harrison's final carry, a 29-yard touchdown run with 3:03 remaining, was a good example of what Hellstern was referring to as “the process.” Harrison bounced off several would-be tacklers at the line of scrimmage to get to the end zone, still running hard after the outcome of the game was already likely decided.

“He's a diehard,” Hellstern said of Harrison, who missed the bulk of last season with a knee injury. “He made that play. We didn't have it blocked well. … You want to be able to create a margin for victory.”

(Thanks to TEAMDAY~! member Vickie Fulkerson for this here Jesuits' note).

Enfield spent last Friday afternoon at a wake for junior teammate Justin Brady, who stabbed to death earlier last week.

Friday night, the Eagles won a thriller in memory of Brady.

Cody Stager threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Wyatt Raymond with 17 seconds left as Enfield rallied to beat Hall, 12-10.

“Cody Stager, who was a close friend of Justin’s, made an amazing throw to Wyatt Raymond, who was also a close friend of Justin’s,” Enfield coach James Lyver told the Manchester Journal Inquirer. “It was fitting that those two guys led us to the win. It was a huge victory and a huge boost for our town.

“Justin’s memory was definitely with us tonight.”

Brady, 16, was stabbed to death early Monday morning (Sept. 10) during an alleged arranged fight with Shyhiem “Trey” Adams. Adams was arraigned the next day and charged with manslaughter in connection with the stabbing.

The Journal Inquirer reported that Brady played for the Eagles last season, with his father telling them that he was sitting out this season due to a broken collarbone.

Enfield’s captains brought Brady’s jersey onto the field before the game and draped it across its bench during the game.

“It was all about the kids and the town. It was all about the Brady family,” Lyver told the JI. “The kids dedicated their efforts to their fallen teammate. They’re so resilient. It was the worst news you could ever imagine, especially after our huge win over Manchester (51-43 in double overtime on Sept. 7). Emotions were high, and to turn around and have a tragedy like this happen, it took the wind out of our sails.

“These guys grew up with Justin and played youth football with him. He was one of their guys. It was just unbelievable for the kids. But they were able to bond together and we were able to talk about a lot of life lessons the last few days.”
