Local roundup: Stonington, Wheeler boys clinch ECC soccer titles

It was a mere three years ago that the Wheeler boys soccer team had 12 total players and won one game.

How long ago that seems, especially after Friday's 6-0 win over Tourtellotte that clinched the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV title for the Lions.

"We have made huge progress from three years ago to today," said coach Joe Mendonca Sr., whose team won three and five games in 2016 and 2017, respectively, before this year's 9-4, 7-0 mark. "The team is playing very well."
