Stonington woman charged with having sex with 15-year-old student

Stonington -- State police have charged a veteran supervisor at the Waterford Country School with providing alcohol to a 15-year-old boy who was in a program at the school and sexually assaulting him at her Elm Street home.

Nicole Souza, 38, of 315 Elm St., Apt. B, Stonington, was charged last week with second-degree sexual assault, delivery of liquor to a minor and risk of injury to a child. Her bond was set at $50,000 but the state judicial data base did not have any information Sunday on whether she was released after her arrest.

The affidavit for her arrest states the 15-year-old boy, who was in the care of the state Department of Children and Families, had been brought by ambulance to The William W. Backus Hospital on the afternoon of June 14 with a blood alcohol level of .20, 2 1/2 times the legal limit for driving.

At the time his family members said he had also been the victim of a sexual assault. A 43-year-old woman told police she had seen “sexual behavior” between the two at her Griswold home on June 14. The woman had also called 911 that day after the boy became ill from drinking. She also said Souza apologized to her for her involvement with the boy saying she was “having a tough time at home and that she took things too far.”

Police said their investigation revealed that on June 14, Souza picked up the boy in Norwich, went swimming with him at Glasgo Pond in Griswold and then to a home there. Once there, they drank screwdrivers and Fireball whiskey.

Souza, who has since been fired by Waterford Country School after 13 years, told state police that she has befriended the boy when he was in her program at the school because they had a lot in common such as music, movies and past relationships. When he left the program, she gave him her cellphone number in case he needed rides.

In her interview with police, she admitted to picking him up June 14 and having Natural Ice Beer and Fireball whiskey in a cooler for adult friends later in the night. She said that when they left the pond, the boy and and a 16-year-old girl drank the alcohol. She said that when they reached the Griswold home of an unidentified 43-year-old woman she stayed in the car. She said she later went inside and said the boy was vomiting. She said she left before the ambulance arrived and later texted the boy saying she was sorry and should not have allowed what she did. She told police she and the boy had gone out five times previously but denied there had been any drinking or any sexual relationship. She said they boy had never been to her Stonington home.

The 16-year-old girl told police the boy has asked for alcohol on June 14, and Souza said she would get it for him before driving to a package store to buy it.

In his interview with police, the boy said he had sex with Souza twice at her Stonington home and that she had bought him condoms, the same brand which were found in the boy’s bedroom. He said Souza told him it would be better if he did not mention that they had sex as to protect her job and her two children.

Police said they also found numerous text messages between the two on the boy’s phone and a photo Souza sent her after she ran the Mystic Half Marathon.
