    H.S. football roundup: Barbosa Torres leads Windham past Montville

    Montville — Windham's Natanael Barbosa-Torres rushed for three touchdowns in his final game as the Whippets cruised to an 18-6 victory over Montville in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III football game on Wednesday.

    Barbosa Torres, who became the Whippets' career rushing leader earlier in the season, scored on runs of 9 and 2 yards in the first quarter, then broke the game open with a 55-yard touchdown run with 1 minute, 33 seconds left in the third quarter.

    The fullback finished the game with 187 yards on 26 carries, the season with 1,835 yards and 27 touchdowns, and ended his career with 5,386 rushing yards for the Whippets, who finished the season 7-2, 1-2.

    Quarterback Ryan Douchette scored the lone TD for Montville (3-7, 0-3) on a 2-yard run with 10 seconds remaining. He led the Indians with 57 rushing yards on 14 carries.

    • Josh Brown ran 33 times for 170 yards and a touchdown as Thames River edged Quinebaug Valley, 16-12, in their Connecticut Technical Conference rivalry game. Logan Starr ran for 30 yards and a touchdown and Albert Velazquez ran for 60 yards for the Crusaders (6-4, 6-4). Alexander Zair also had an interception. The Pride finished 5-5, 5-5.

    • Plainfield unofficially qualified for the CIAC Class S playoffs despite losing to rival Griswold, 13-6, for the 15th time in 16 seasons.

    Plainfield (8-2) joins defending Class M champion Killingly (9-1) as the Eastern Connecticut Conference’s only playoff representatives. It is the Panthers’ first playoff berth since 1999.

    The playoff participants and seedings won’t be official until approved by the CIAC’s football committee.

    Other teams that unofficially qualified on Wednesday night were Fairfield Prep (Class LL), Windsor (Class L), North Haven (Class L), Bunnell (Class L), Platt (Class L), and Brookfield (Class M).

    The Class L and S brackets are both filled. There’s one berth to be claimed in LL, and two in Class M.

    The state quarterfinals (Tuesday, Nov. 27) and semifinals (Sunday, Dec. 2) are hosted by the higher seeds. The finals are on Saturday, Dec. 8 at sites to be determined.
