    Local roundup: East Lyme's Putnam honored by CSWA

    East Lyme's Dave Putnam is one of six people being honored statewide by the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance, having been selected by the organization to receive the John Wentworth Good Sports Award.

    Putnam, the East Lyme Parks and Recreation Director, will be honored at the 78th Gold Key Dinner on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.

    Putnam, a 1982 East Lyme High School graduate, serves as executive director of the Miracle League of Southeastern Connecticut. He spearheading an effort to bring just the second Miracle League field in the state — giving children with disabilities throughout the region the opportunity to participate in sports — to East Lyme. Earlier this year he was named Niantic Lions Club Humanitarian of the Year and earned the Connecticut Recreation and Parks Distinguished Service Award.

    Others being honored are Chris Bishop of Wallingford, John and Judy Clark of radio station WCNX, Michael Cotnoir of Enfield and John Larkins of Shelton. John Wentworth is the forfmer sports editor of the New Britain Herald.

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • St. Thomas More won its home opener, beating Springfield Commonwealth 77-67. Zeke Blauner had 21 points and five steals, Tyshun Bryant had 13 points and nine assists, Desmond Claude had 18 points and six rebounds and Ta-Jae Jenkins had 10 points and five rebounds for the Chancellors (2-1).

    T-More also won Saturday, beating St. Andrew's in triple overtime. Bryant had 17 points and 13 steals, Blauner scored 22 and Ricardo Alleyne and Claude had 15 points each.
