Two killed, three injured in I-95 crash in Stonington

Stonington — State police say two people were killed and three seriously injured in a head-on collision in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 just north of Exit 91 around 12:45 a.m. Sunday.

Lorna Valcin, 26, of Braintree, Mass., and Eric Ramakers, 37, of Phoenix, Ariz., were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Valcin was riding in the front passenger seat of her 2011 Toyota Prius when it collided with a 2015 Lexus that was traveling the wrong way on the highway.

Both Jose Gonzalez, 38, of 57 South Road, Groton, who owns the Lexus and was driving northbound in the southbound lanes, and Stephane Francois, 26, of  Brockton, Mass., who was diving Valcin's Prius, were transported with serious injuries to Rhode Island Hospital. Francois was flown by Life Star helicopter while Gonzalez was transported by ambulance.

A second passenger sitting in the rear seat of the Lexus, Jerome Aullychad, 26, of Elmont, N.Y., was flown by another Life Star helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He is still in critical condition, police said.

The conditions of both Francois and Gonzalez were not immediately available Sunday.

Stonington police closed ramps onto the highway Sunday morning while state police investigated the accident. The highway remained closed until 6:30 a.m.

Police did not release any details about how and where Gonzalez entered the southbound lanes of the highway.

Police said the accident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Trooper Pierce at (860) 848-6500.
