    Montville's Egan a finalist for national coach of the year award

    Montville — Tim Egan, who has guided Montville High School's boys' outdoor track and field program since 1996, has been named  a finalist for national coach of the year by the National High School Coaches Association.

    Egan is one of eight finalists for the national honor and will attend the NHSCA's annual Awards Banquet on June 26 in Bismarck, North Dakota, there the national coach of the year in 19 recognized sports will be announced.

    Windham wrestling coach Pat Risley is the only other finalist from an Eastern Connecticut Conference school.

    Egan has compiled a 210-108 record during his tenure and coached the Indians to eight ECC regular-season championships and four state championships (1989, 2001, 2002, 2003). Montville was also the state runner-up on three occasions.

    Prior to coaching at Montville, Egan was head coach of the boys' track and field program at Waterford High School from 1985-94.

    The selection for the national award is based on longevity, service to high school athletics, honors, championship years, and winning percentage. The nominees and finalists are evaluated by experts in the field of coaching using a sport-specific rubrics to assign points in each category.
