Groton — City police have arrested a New London firefighter on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and driving an unregistered motor vehicle, according to a police report.

Police said they received a phone call about 3:09 p.m. Thursday of a driver passed out in a vehicle on Bridge Street.

Police said they investigated and administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests to the driver of the vehicle, Rocco A. Basilica, 53, of 7 Hunters Run, Oakdale. He was taken by Groton Ambulance Association to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

Basilica is a lieutenant with the New London Fire Department who has been out of work for more than a year because of a work-related injury.

He is due in New London Superior Court on Feb. 28, according to the police report.
