Stonington High School stages 'Hello, Dolly!' and Montville High School presents 'Into the Woods'

Two iconic musicals are being staged this weekend by high school students.

The Stonington High School Drama Program is presenting “Hello, Dolly!”

The show — with original music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, and book by Michael Stewart — was just revived on Broadway with Bette Midler starring as Dolly Levi. Songs in the show about a boisterous matchmatcher include “Before the Parade Passes By,” “Put on Your Sunday Clothes” and the indelible title song. The cast is led by Grace Gilbert as Dolly, along with Nicolas Turco, Erich Phelps and Chloe Kolbenheyer.

Erin Sousa-Stanley is the director and choreographer, and Chris Stanley is the music director.

Meanwhile, Montville High School students are taking on “Into the Woods,” where fairy tales get darkly comic — and sometimes just plain dark — twists. The songs are by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. Familiar characters are here, from Little Red Riding Hood to Cinderella, but they aren’t the same old figures. (The 2014 movie adaptation starred Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and James Corden.)

The cast includes Colby Browne as the Baker, Kaleigh Browne as the Baker’s Wife, Melody Sopczak as the Witch, and Morgan Judge as Cinderella.

Susan Walsh is directing, and Jeff Cregeur, a 2014 Montville High School alum and also a Hartt School of Music graduate, is the musical director.

“Hello, Dolly!,” 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, Stonington High School, 176 South Broad St., Pawcatuck; $15, $12 seniors and students; (860) 650-0166.

“Into the Woods,” 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Montville High School, 800 Old Colchester Road; $15, $10 students and seniors.
