Groton principal reassigned to non-administrative position

Groton — The principal of Northeast Academy Arts Magnet Elementary School has been reassigned to a non-administrative position at Fitch High School, following the completion of an investigation into a personnel matter, Superintendent Michael Graner said.

Paul Esposito, principal of Northeast Academy since 2011, was placed on leave on Feb. 11 so school district administrators could look into a personnel matter, Graner said last month. The process of looking into the matter has been completed and the decision to reassign him was made Tuesday, Graner said by phone Thursday.

Graner said he can't elaborate further because it's a personnel and a legal matter.

In a March 8 letter to parents to inform them that the issue was continuing, Graner had reassured parents that the matter does not involve children and at no time was student safety compromised.

The current interim principal at Northeast Academy, Val Nelson — who was formerly principal of Charles Barnum Elementary School — will continue for the foreseeable future, Graner said.

Esposito will be working as an online course tutor at the high school, Graner said.
