On the Side: Old Mystic General Store pizza
Dan Gaiewski, an 18-year-old senior at Fitch High School, told me that the best pizza in Connecticut is at the Old Mystic General Store in Old Mystic. Yeah, I thought to myself, sure. Dan said the owner had worked at Pepe’s. Yeah, I thought. Like every chef in America says he used to work for Tom Keller at the French Laundry in Napa.
About three weeks ago, I ordered a small tomato pie. I thought maybe the owner did work for Pepe’s, since Pepe’s does make a tomato pie. It was beyond delicious. A week ago I ordered a large Margarita pie (tomato sauce, mozz and basil, which is, to me, the only way to judge a pizza). I took it to friends in Norwich. We finished it darn quick. The crust is perfect, the tomato sauce sweet and zippy, the mozzarella not overdone and the basil fresh, although I would put it atop a blistering pizza instead of in the oven. It was as good as a Pepe’s pizza. And the place serves grinders and paninis, too. Thanks, Dan.
