Education on the water

Students from the Ledyard, Fitch, and New London high schools' "More Than Words" diversity leadership group embarked on the schooner Amistad for the final lesson in the Discovering Amistad curriculum Monday.

The group, comprised of students from the three schools, meets collectively five times a year. This school year the groups met twice with educators from Discovering Amistad to experience the three classroom lessons that are part of the curriculum covering race issues from the 1839 Amistad incident to modern times.

The three-hour sail about the replica schooner was the culmination of the program and gave the students a more hands-on understanding of the experience of the Amistad African captives. Students helped raise the sails and had additional classroom lessons on board during the trip. Amistad has two more educational sails out of Custom House Pier this week before the ship departs for Bridgeport.
