    Memorial Day event roundup

    Editor's note: This version corrects the times for Old Saybrook events.

    This Monday is the most parade-populated Monday of the year around these parts.

    And why shouldn't it be? It is Memorial Day, after all. It is the day that we honor people who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

    That's what these parades do, as folks in the processions step lively, with bands playing and flags waving.

    What follows is a list of some of the Memorial Day events in the region.

    Sunday, May 26

    East Lyme Candlelight Vigil — 7 p.m., Liberty Green, corner of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, East Lyme.

    Ledyard Ceremony and Parade — 1 p.m., Colonel Ledyard Highway from the fairgrounds to Ledyard High School; hosted by the Ledyard Lions.

    New London Candlelight Vigil — 7:30 p.m., Parade Plaza; luminaries available at 6:45 p.m.; rain location Union Station.

    Monday, May 27

    East Lyme parade — 2 p.m., from St. John's Green on Main Street to East Lyme Town Hall on Pennsylvania Avenue, Niantic.

    Mystic parade — 2 p.m., travels down Water, Pear and Gravel streets, followed by memorial ceremony at the VFW home post, 60 Stonington Road.

    Noank Parade and Picnic — 10 a.m., Main Street; picnic starts at 11:15 a.m.

    Norwich Parade — noon, St. Patrick's Cathedral, 213 Broadway; ceremony at 1:15 p.m.

    Old Lyme Parade — 11 a.m., Lyme Street Fire Station, 69 Lyme St.; rain location Lyme-Old Lyme High School.

    Old Saybrook Wreath Laying and Parade — 9 a.m., Saybrook Point Pavilion, College Street, Old Saybrook; followed by a parade down Elm Street at 10 a.m.; (860) 395-5550.

    Salem Parade — 10 a.m., Route 85 to the Town Green; celebrating the town's bicentennial; hosted by the Salem VFW.

    Taftville Ceremony — 10 a.m., Memorial Park, South Second Avenue; hosted by American Legion Post 104; (860) 859-7811.

    Voluntown Parade — 2 p.m., starts at Robbins Cemetery, Route 138, and concludes at the Veterans Monument, Route 138.

    Decoration Day — 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Mystic Seaport Museum, 75 Greenmanville Ave., Mystic; 10:15 a.m., Civil War memorial; noon, Greenmanville Church service and color guard; 1 p.m., wartime music program; 3 p.m., discussion on the impact of war on 19th-century Mystic residents; free with museum admission; (860) 572-5331.

    Waterford Ceremony - 10:30 a.m., East Neck Cemetery, 143 Niles Hill Road; park on Seabreeze Drive or Maginnis Parkway; rain or shine.

    Witness For Peace Memorial Day Concert - 10 a.m., Hygienic Art, 79 Bank St., New London; featuring Hugh Birdsall, Rob Nelson, The Raging Grannies, and Kala Farnham; proceeds support Save the Children's efforts in Syria; $10.
