New London — Reuben Burk, who joined Connecticut College as an assistant last season, was named head coach of the Camels' men's soccer program on Wednesday.

Burk replaces Kenny Murphy, who announced his retirement recently after guiding Conn for 10 seasons.

"We are pleased to name Reuben our head coach and seamlessly leverage the strong team dynamic and success that exists on our current team," athletic director Fran Shields said in a release. "He brings an incredible work ethic, organizational skills, a variety of coaching experiences, and a deep knowledge of the recruitment landscape of Division III."

Burk played a major roll in his first season when helped lead the Camels to an NCAA Division III tournament bid. Conn finished 13-3-2 overall and 7-1-2 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Camels also won their first NCAA game in school history with a 4-0 home win over Thomas College.

"Reuben did a great job for me as an assistant," Murphy said. "His attention to detail and his commitment to recruiting were beyond impressive. I am excited and confident he will do a fine job leading the men's soccer program forward."

Burke, a 2013 Hobart College graduate, spent one year at Newberry

Burk came to Connecticut College after spending one year at Newberry College (S.C.), two at Holy Cross and two and Alfred University (N.Y.). He was the recruiting coordinator at Newberry and helped establish one of the program's most diverse recruiting classes for the 2017-18 season by helping get commitments from student-athletes from Brazil, Italy, North Carolina, South Carolina and Maryland.

"I fully understand how fortunate I am to be able to take on this new role and serve these student-athletes," Burk said. "These student-athletes are the reason why I love working here, and they have a very bright future ahead of them both on and off the field. I believe it is my duty to help provide a rewarding and educational four-year experience, and I am extremely excited about the opportunity to do this for them."

College softball

• UConn athletic director David Benedict announced that Jen McIntyre will not return as the head softball coach in 2019-20. McIntyre had a 95-163 overall record in five seasons with the Huskies, including 24-68 in the American Athletic Conference.

"I am thankful for the opportunity to have served as the head coach at the University of Connecticut and I am proud of all of the progress the program has made since our arrival on campus five years ago," McIntyre said. "We have made tremendous strides as we transitioned to the American Athletic Conference and I wish the student-athletes success as they continue in their careers."
