New London police arrest man in screwdriver assault
New London — The New London Police Department on Thursday morning apprehended a man and charged him with stabbing someone with a screwdriver on Wednesday, police said in a news release.
Carlos Mejia, 24, of 73 Riverview Ave. in New London, has been charged with second-degree assault, second-degree unlawful restraint and disorderly conduct, police said. The court set a $75,000 cash-surety bond.
During a domestic violence incident, he stabbed the victim with a screwdriver near Riverview Avenue and Crescent Street, police said. First responders found the victim inside a residence in the area with a "superficial stab wound" when they arrived at 5:46 p.m. Wednesday.
An ambulance crew took the victim to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening. The suspect, whom police said the victim knows, fled the scene before police arrived. Police initiated a search but didn't find the suspect on Wednesday.
