Police: Intoxicated man struck 3 mailboxes, drove into marsh in East Lyme

East Lyme — Police on Monday charged a Groton man with drunkenly crashing into at least three mailboxes and a guardrail, then driving into a marsh.

Police said David McFadden, 56, of 40 Senkow Ave., Groton, was driving down Old Black Point Road in a red Chevrolet pickup truck when he lost control about 3:15 p.m.

Police said they found McFadden in the driver's seat and he was the sole occupant of the truck. They said he "displayed obvious signs of impairment" during subsequent sobriety tests.

Officers charged McFadden with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving with a suspended license, failure to carry minimum insurance and making an improper turn. Released on a $2,500 bond, he is due in New London Superior Court on July 28.
