Devin Carney: state representative by day, actor by night!

Yes, Carney is a politican, but he is now starring in The Saybrook Stage Company’s production of “Romantic Comedy” that’s running tonight through Sunday at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center.

“Romantic Comedy” was written by Bernard Slade, whose best-known work is “Same Time, Next Year.” In this story, Jason Carmichael is a successful and self-important Broadway writer whose co-author is retiring, even as Carmichael is gearing up for his wedding to a socialite. He finds a new collaborator in schoolteacher and aspiring playwright Phoebe Craddock. Comedy — maybe of the romantic variety? — ensues.

In addition to Carney, the cast includes Cathleen McDonald, Brett DePetrillo, and Shannon Keegan. Terri Corigliano acts in and directs “Romantic Comedy.”

Carney is a member of the Kate’s board, and he has acted in previous Saybrook Stage productions as well, including “The Farnsworth Invention” and “Twelve Angry Men.” And, speaking of acting, he also happens to be the grandson of the late Art Carney, who starred on “The Honeymooners” and won an Oscar for “Harry and Tonto."
