Ledyard — One car and the garage that housed it were destroyed Sunday afternoon in a fire at 216 Avery Hill Road.

    No one was injured.

Ledyard Fire Chief Jon Mann said flames reached 15 feet above the roof line of the two-story, two-car garage, which directly abutted an adjoining home, and could be seen from nearby Route 214. Mann said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Dispatched at 3:09 p.m., several fire departments responded after the house's owner reported the fire. Though the garage was a total loss, the house, which had extensive fire and water damage to its entire left side, can be repaired and made inhabitable again, Mann said. A two-member family was displaced because of the fire.

The fire was contained within 30 minutes after firefighters arrived, Mann said. As of 4 p.m., fire crews had extinguished the blaze but were still working to put out hotspots.

Besides the Ledyard and Gales Ferry fire departments, the Mohegan Tribal, Laurel Hill and Poquetanuck fire departments also responded, as did American Ambulance and the Ledyard Police Department.
