Groton — First responders recovered a body from the Thames River on Saturday night.

The person, who is deceased and whose identity has not been released by police, was spotted about 6:30 p.m. by boaters in the river near the Gold Star Bridge. The body appeared to have been in the water for some time.

The body was towed behind a boat belonging to the City of Groton, in thick fog, and brought to the KE Streeter Boat Launch, 58 Fairview Ave., in the City of Groton.

On the other side of the river, police and fire personnel from New London responded to the Thames River Boat Launch. The Town of Groton Marine Unit also was out on the water and the Coast Guard offered assistance.

A woman who was fishing off the KE Streeter launch said she and others saw something floating in the water but couldn’t tell what it was. She later heard boaters screaming, “It’s a body.” The woman did not give her name.

No further information was immediately available.
