    APPOINTED

    Ulysses B. Hammond, retired Vice President at Connecticut College and former Executive Officer of the District of Columbia Court System, was recently appointed to Chelsea Groton Bank’s Board of Trustees. Hammond became a Corporator of the Bank in 2005. He has also been a Board Member of the Chelsea Groton Foundation since 2015. Hammond was president of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Trust Fund for 10 years and is a past Board Chair of Lawrence + Memorial Healthcare System, the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT and the United Way of Southeastern CT.     Antonino Auto Group was one of the sponsors of the 2nd Annual Military Appreciation Day, which was held at Ocean Beach Park Saturday. The event was organized by New London Veterans Affairs, Ocean Beach Park and the city. During the event, active duty, retired military and veterans gained access to the park for free.     Ocean House Management Collection, operators of the Ocean House, Weekapaug Inn and Watch Hill Inn, will present the first major donation issued by the Ocean House Fund for Charitable Giving on Tuesday. This first Ocean House Fund gift is a cargo van, designed to help the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center pick up and deliver food for local residents and children in need. The Ocean House Fund was created to help children and families in need and improve local foodways. The fund raises money through special events, the sale of an annual collectable character, charity drives, and guest and employee involvement. The fund teamed up with Masse Automotive Group to find a Chevrolet express cargo van that best fit the organization’s needs and Printing Plus to put on a logo for the organization to have increased visibility.

    Young Professionals of Eastern CT will be volunteering at United Way of Southeastern CT on Aug. 26, 4-6:30 p.m. helping sort items from the Back-to-School Supply Drive. Supply sorting will be followed by an open meeting of Young Leaders United.     Groton Public Schools has been selected as the recipient of the local Books-A-Million Back-To-School Book Drive program. The Books-A-Million store located in Waterford Commons will collect newly purchased books through Aug. 26th to be donated to Groton schools.     UCFS is distributing reusable bags to its health centers to give to clients in need. Stop & Shop Norwich donated 1,200 bags to UCFS. Stop & Shop New England also donated to the Rosalyn Allen Food Pantry.

    Cowlick’s Creamery in Waterford, owned by Tara Mazzella, has been chosen as one of the best ice cream shops in America by TODAY.com. The feature includes only one ice cream shop in Connecticut and two in New England. Cowlick’s, located at 521 Boston Post Road, opened in 2013 as a self-serve frozen yogurt shop.
