Author Anna Pitoniak signs her new book Thursday at the Savoy in Westerly

Two years ago, first-time author Anna Pitoniak became the latest to successfully attempt that risky high-wire feat known as "writing an Attractive and Smart Young Persons in Manhattan novel." Called "The Futures," the book used alternating points of view to capture the slowly eroding relationship between Julia and Evan — lovers who met as undergrads at Yale — as they become enmeshed in the maw of NYC.

Pitoniak is celebrating her second novel, "Neccesary People" — this time it's college best pals Stella and Violet who end up in New York, where success in the cable news biz becomes a battleground betwixt the two — with a talk and signing tonight at the Savoy Book Shop in Westerly. Pitoniak is traveling oft-trod territory, but she's doing so with wit and a scalpel-sharp eye and ear for a big segment of today's culture and priorities.

Anna Pitoniak, 7 tonight, Savoy Book Shop, 10 Canal St., Westerly; free; (401) 213-3901.
