Ledyard — Ledyard High School will induct five former players into its Football Hall of Fame during the school's ninth annual induction ceremony, athletic director Jim Buonocore announced Thursday.

The ceremony will take place during halftime of the Colonels' game against Griswold on Friday, Sept. 20, at Bill Mignault Field. The game begins at 6 p.m.

Class of 2019 honorees include Randy Atkins (Class of 1974), John Sean Patrick Lowe (1994), D.J. Berry (2004), Sam Saccomano (2009) and Jordan Kowalski (2014).

"The hall of fame provides us the opportunity to properly recognize former athletes who made significant contributions to the football program," Buonocore said in a release. "Each inductee brings a solid list of accomplishments and they distinguished themselves on the local and state level while representing our school and football program.

"I look forward to welcoming this group home in the fall."

• Randy Atkins was a three-year starter for the Colonels. He was an All-ECC performer and named honorable mention all-state while starting as an offensive lineman and linebacker. Atkins attended Central Connecticut State University and became a successful teacher, coach, administrator and sports official at the high school and collegiate level in Oklahoma. Atkins currently resides in Pace, Fla., and teaches special education.

• John Sean Patrick Lowe III was a three-year starter at defensive back for the Colonels, helping lead the team to state championships in 1991 and 1993. As a senior, Lowe led the team in tackles (82) and was named to the All-ECC, all-area and all-state teams. Lowe was also an outstanding wrestler for Ledyard and competed at the national level. Lowe currently resides in Gilman.

• D.J. Berry was an All-ECC and all-state performer at wide receiver and defensive back, helping lead the Colonels to a berth in the 2003 state playoffs. Berry was also an all-league performer in basketball. Upon graduation, Berry played football for three seasons at Central Connecticut before completing his collegiate career at Endicott College. Berry resides in Ledyard and works in the pharmaceutical industry as a territorial manager for Novo Nordisk, as well as in real estate investment.

• Sam Saccomano, who played wide receiver and defensive back, was named to the All-ECC team, The Day's All-Area team and the CHSCA All-State football team after helping lead the Colonels to the state playoffs three times during his career. He led the Colonels with 56 receptions for 853 yards and 10 touchdowns during his senior season. Saccomano was also named all-state for his accomplishments in indoor and outdoor track. After graduation, Saccomano attended Colorado State and competed in track and field. He lives in Colorado and is a research associate at Editas Medicine in Boulder.

• Jordan Kowalski played wide receiver and defensive back, leading the Colonels to the state finals in 2011 and the state playoffs in 2013. Kowalski was named The Day's All-Area Football Player of the Year after his senior season in which he had 37 receptions for 729 yards and 21 touchdowns along with 126 tackles on defense. He was named to the prestigious New Haven Register and Walter Camp All-State football teams. Kowalski was also an all-state baseball player. A UConn graduate, Kowalski is currently continuing his education at the Quinnipiac School of Law.
