    Waterford skater earns three medals at national USARS championship

    Austin Greeno, a fourth-grader at Great Neck Elementary School in Waterford, recently attended the USA Roller Sports National Championships in Spokane, Wash. He competed against skaters from around the United States, earning gold medals in the primary A boys’ loop and combined events, a silver medal in the primary A boys’ figure events and fifth place in the primary A boys’ freestyle event.

    Greeno currently practices at Ron-A-Roll in Vernon, and his goal is to earn a spot on the national team and represent the United States in world competition.

    David Howe joins EastConn

    David C. Howes, previously executive director of the ISAAC School in New London, has been named regional director of EASTCONN, leading the agency's new, regional, alternative high school for northeastern Connecticut students.

    The LEAP (Learners Empowered to Achieve their Potential) School welcomed Howes as its new principal after a nationwide search. Located at 729 Main St. in Willimantic, LEAP School is open to students from all eastern Connecticut school districts.

    Howes served as principal and executive director at the Interdistrict School of Arts and Communication from 2014-2019. A founding teacher at ISAAC, he taught between 1998 and 2011 and he also served as ISAAC's director of academics for many years. He was an education consultant for Hartford and New Haven public schools, and served as assistant principal at Hartford's Expeditionary Learning Academy at Moylan Elementary School.

    Early in his career, Howes taught social studies in Texas and special education in Massachusetts.
