'Hot dog boys' still at it 61 years later

Russell DiNoto of New London, left, and his stepbrother, Richard Vescovi of East Lyme, on Sept. 9 recreated a photo published 61 years ago in The Day that showed the pair eating from either end of a hot dog during Kiddies Day at Ocean Beach Park. (photo submitted)

Russell DiNoto of New London and his stepbrother, Richard Vescovi of East Lyme, on Sept. 9 recreated a photo published 61 years ago in The Day that showed the pair eating from either end of a hot dog during Kiddies Day at Ocean Beach Park. The event was held June 24, 1958, sponsored by the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, and it featured free frankfurters, drinks and rides.

Vescovi says the “Hot Dog Boys,” then both paperboys for The Day, are still at it, but now instead of swimming and horsing around, they go to the beach for the weekly auto shows that ended for the season Sept. 9. The pair were 9 years old when their picture was printed, and now they are 71. Vescovi, who grew up in Waterford, said his uncle used to run all the rides at the park.

A photo in The Day depicts Russell DiNoto, now of New London and his stepbrother, Richard Vescovi, now of East Lyme, eating from either end of a hot dog during Kiddies Day at Ocean Beach Park on June 24, 1958. The two recreated the photo Sept. 9 at the park’s last car show of the year. (photo submitted)
