Collecting for those in need
New London — Sgt. Max Bertsch takes a ShopRite Partners in Caring bag filled with nonperishable food items from Trisha Rios, right, during the New London Police Union food drive for the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Bank on Saturday outside ShopRite in New London.
The store has pre-bagged nonperishable items that customers can purchase for $5 or $10 and donate to the food drive. This was the 14th year the union has held the drive, and in past years on average have collected 3,000 pounds of nonperishable items, 100 frozen turkeys and $600 in cash that they convert to ShopRite gift cards to give to families through the Adopt-A-Family program at Neighborhood Alliance of New London.
