    Local roundup: Wasilefsky named Waterford girls' outdoor track coach

    Waterford — Samantha Wasilefsky has been named head coach at Waterford, athletic director Chris Landry announced on Friday.

    Wasilefsky, who teaches in the world language department at the high school, spent the previous two seasons at New London, where she was an assistant in 2017-18 and the head coach of both indoor and outdoor programs in 2018-19.

    "We are super excited to add Coach Wasilefsky to our track coaching staff," Landry said in a release. "Her passion for the sport is evident as soon as you speak with her. I am confident that she will make an immediate impact to our entire track team and serve as a strong female role model for our student-athletes."

    H.S. wrestling

    • Waterford hosted Wrestle for the Cure and went 2-1, with wins over Westerly (60-18) and Putnam (66-6) while losing to Coventry (R.I.) 46-30. AJ Sachatello went 3-0 at 152 points, Jackson Harshberger (182) was 2-0 with a forfeit and Donald Mellon (145) also won two matches for Waterford (11-10).

    Waterford beat New London 39-36 on Wednesday. Brody Ruest (106), Mason Concascia (120), Virginia Juarbe (126), Wasiq Namwar (132), Jeremy Hynek (138) and Harshberger had pins for Waterford and Zander Stringer (170) also won his match. Max Commander (152), Timothy Flynn (160) and Jadian Mackenzie (195) had pins for New London while teammates Noah Boozer (145) and Keeano Gonzalez (285) also won their matches.

    Men's hockey

    • Connor Rodericks made 43 saves as Connecticut College beat No. 1 Trinity 1-0 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Jacob Moreau scored at the 14:34 mark to give Conn (7-7-1, 3-5-1) the lead and Rodericks and the defense made it stand up. Trinity (12-2-1, 7-1-1) outshot Conn 43-30.   

    Men's swimming

    • Coast Guard Academy won 12 events to highlight a non-scoring meet against Division I Fairfield at the University of Rhode Island. The Bears had three swimmers win two individual events apiece — CJ Omweg in the 100 butterfly (52.65) and 200 backstroke (1:54.89), Devin McClure in the 200 freestyle (1:45.66) and 500 freestyle (4:51.48), and Joe Rodriguez in the 50 freestyle (21.11) and 100 free (47.56).

    The Bears also picked up individual wins from Tyler Bland in the 100 breaststroke (58.83), Connor Shenk in the 100 backstroke (53.06), Eric Fuhs in the 200 breaststroke (2:10.27) and Derek Ledford in the 200 butterfly (1:57.30).

    Women's swimming

    • Josie McGuire picked up Coast Guard's only win in a non-scoring meet against Division I programs Fairfield and host URI. McGuire won the 500 freestyle in 5:13.18 and was second in the 400 IM (4:44.74). Sophie Furigay took second in the 100 backstroke (101.97) and the 200 backstroke (2:11.61) while Ashley Fuller was second in the 200 butterfly (2:18.31).

    Women's basketball

    • Old Lyme's Abby Stone scored a career-high 36 points as UConn Avery Point routed Hudson Valley CC 95-70 on Wednesday night in Troy, N.Y. Stone also added eight rebounds and seven assists for the Pointers (9-6) while Waterford's Rebekah Sanders added 16 points and 18 rebounds, Preston's Carsen Keith had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Ashley Burke had 15 points and Julitza Delgado had 10 points, eight assists and five steals.
